Every summer, millions of people pass through Montana on their way to Yellowstone, Glacier, and everything in between. One of the most common questions we hear at the counter: “I’m not from here. Can I actually buy?”
Short answer: yes. Here’s the longer answer, so your visit goes smoothly.
Out-of-state visitors can purchase in Montana
Montana law allows any adult 21 or older with a valid, government-issued photo ID to purchase adult-use cannabis, and residency doesn’t matter. A driver’s license from any state, a state ID card, or a passport all work at the register.
One note for traveling medical patients: Montana does not recognize out-of-state medical marijuana cards. If you’re 21 or older, you can still shop as an adult-use customer; you just won’t receive medical pricing or medical purchase limits.
Purchase limits apply to everyone
Whether you live in Billings or you’re road-tripping from Ohio, the same limits apply. Adult-use customers may purchase and possess up to one ounce of usable marijuana, which Montana defines as:
- 1 ounce of flower, or
- 8 grams (or 8 milliliters) of concentrate, or
- 800 milligrams of THC in infused products
These aren’t separate allowances. One ounce of usable marijuana is the total cap across formats. Your budtender handles the equivalency math at checkout.
Bring cash (or use our ATMs)
Cannabis retail is cash-only across most of the country due to federal banking restrictions, and Montana is no exception. Every ForeverGreen location has an ATM on site, so an empty wallet doesn’t have to end your visit.
The rules of the road for travelers
This is the part every visitor should read twice:
Your purchase stays in Montana. Transporting cannabis across state lines is prohibited under federal law, even into another state where it’s legal. Buy what you’ll use here.
Federal land is off-limits. Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks, national forests, and all other federal lands prohibit cannabis possession entirely, regardless of Montana law. If a national park is on your itinerary, plan accordingly and leave your products behind.
No public consumption. Montana limits consumption to private residences or private property with the owner’s permission. Hotels set their own policies, and most prohibit smoking of any kind, so check before you light anything. Public spaces, sidewalks, bars, and vehicles are all off-limits.
Keep it sealed while driving. Transport products in their original, sealed packaging, out of the driver’s reach. Driving under the influence remains illegal, full stop.
Some counties don’t allow sales. Montana lets counties opt out of recreational sales, so dispensary access varies as you travel the state. Both Billings (Yellowstone County) and Bozeman (Gallatin County) have licensed adult-use dispensaries operating.
